How Often Are New Dental X-rays Necessary?

Posted on 2/28/2019 by Virginia Rome, DDS
How Often Are New Dental X-rays Necessary? There are very few people who like to get x-rays on their teeth. The method that used to be used to get dental x-rays was uncomfortable and off-putting. New methods of x-rays have improved the comfort and speed of taking dental x-rays. The question many people have for us is- how often do I have to take x-rays to ensure my teeth and gums are healthy? The answer? It depends.

Frequency of X-Rays

If you have healthy teeth and gums, you only need to get what are called bitewing x-rays every couple of years. The reason you need to get bitewing x-rays every couple of years is because they are the earliest sign of cavities, which means we are able to fill them quickly before they can cause trouble. More extensive x-rays are usually done every three or four years to check for root health and bone health as well. These x-rays can be great preventative medicine, as damage to the roots or jawbones can cause serious problems.

Children need x-rays more frequently, because their teeth are growing more rapidly and changing rapidly. Because children's teeth grow and change so quickly, this means that problems within their mouths can also develop quickly, and unless preventative measures are taken, the child's teeth may misalign, or come up too quickly before the baby tooth is ready to come out. Other problems exist as well.

Of course, if you are having problems with your teeth, which are in the process of being corrected, you will need more x-rays to determine whether the preventative measures and repair techniques have been effective.

If you have questions about how x-rays are taken, and how they help keep your teeth strong and healthy, give us a call. We will be happy to talk with you about your dental x-rays and how they help us help you smile.
